Tree 68 at IMMA, Earth Rising 2024. Site-specific research and sound installation, IMMA Grounds — commissioned by the Irish Museum of Modern Art for Earth Rising, September 2024. A low impact, creative ecological project in response to a horse chestnut tree in the meadow at IMMA. We spent 6 weeks visiting and sitting with this one urban tree, learning about it’s world. Quietly listening and observing.
Tree 68 has grown low to the ground, creating an intimate cave-like space with natural acoustic qualities. We captured field recordings in this space of the ambient soundworld of our tree, including bioacoustic recordings — sounds of living species in the vicinity of the space. Dervla developed a digital research project that could be viewed on participants' smartphones. Jamie created 30 minutes of music compositions for the project using the field recordings taken at the site.
The project was triggered by QR codes at the tree.
The piece received very good engagement from the public over Culture Night and the three days of Earth Rising.
